In celebration of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Lotus STEMM presents to you this dynamic panel of women in science from the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Come out and hear about their journeys, learn more about their fields, and have the option to meet with them!

Meet our speakers!

Manjot Dhamrait, B.Eng Sustainable Specialist Chemical Engineer 

Manjot Dhamrait is a dedicated sustainability professional with a degree in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Environment and Urban Sustainability from Toronto Metropolitan University, where she graduated in 2023. Throughout her academic journey, Manjot was actively engaged in several student organizations, including Women in Engineering, the Chemical Engineering Course Union, and the Engineering Student Society. During her studies, she gained invaluable industry experience through co-op placements as a Process Engineering Student at VPC Group Inc. and a Project Engineer at Sofina Foods, where she honed her technical expertise and problem-solving skills. Currently, Manjot is a Sustainability Specialist at Azelis, where she works to drive sustainable practices within the company’s operations. Her career trajectory reflects a strong commitment to both engineering innovation and environmental stewardship, and she is passionate about supporting the advancement of women in STEM.

Shilpa Shenoy, PhD, Researcher

Shilpa Shenoy, PhD is a passionate researcher with a strong background in microbiology, clinical research, and regulatory affairs. With more than 8+ years of experience in diverse roles as a researcher coordinator, STEMM educator, content creator, and medical writer. She is dedicated to fostering a more inclusive and accessible STEMM environment for women.

Kritika Aggarwal, B.Tech, Senior Quality Specialist

Kritika Aggarwal is a dynamic brown woman in STEM, bringing over 12 years of experience across biosimilars, food, pharmaceuticals, and cell and gene therapy, where she plays a pivotal role in driving innovation and progress within the biotechnology sector. A graduate in Biotechnology, she has built a solid foundation in life sciences and a keen understanding of the rapidly evolving biotech landscape. Throughout her career, Kritika has gained expertise in cutting-edge therapeutic areas and contributed to the development and commercialization of groundbreaking solutions. Beyond her professional achievements, Kritika is deeply committed to supporting immigrants through her volunteer work at TRIEC, where she mentors newcomers to help them navigate and thrive in the Canadian job market—a cause close to her heart.

Shivani Railowal, BSc, Cell Biology Research Associate

Shivani Railowal is a biotech professional specializing in gene, cell, and regenerative therapy. Currently a Research Associate at Allarta Life Science, she is expanding her involvement in stem cell research and actively building her professional profile. Passionate about advocating for South Asian women in STEM, Shivani seeks to amplify representation and mentorship opportunities in the field. With expertise in cell culture, cryopreservation, and GMP compliance, she is dedicated to driving innovation while fostering diversity in biotech.

What is the meaning of International Day of Women and Girls in science?

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated on February 11th each year, plays a crucial role in promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Who is Lotus STEMM?

Lotus STEMM is an initiative dedicated to empowering young South Asian women to pursue and thrive in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM). Focused on breaking down the cultural and societal barriers that often discourage young South Asian girls from entering these fields, Lotus STEMM provides the resources, mentorship, and community support needed to inspire and guide them toward successful careers in STEMM. The non-profit organization addresses challenges such as gender bias, lack of representation, and limited access to STEMM opportunities, which are often compounded for South Asian women. By offering tailored programs, workshops, and networking events, Lotus STEMM creates a platform where young women can find role models, connect with peers, and build the confidence to navigate their educational and professional journeys. Lotus STEMM celebrates the achievements of South Asian women in STEMM, highlighting their contributions and showcasing their groundbreaking work. The initiative also works to create inclusive environments within educational institutions and workplaces, where South Asian women are encouraged to excel without facing discrimination or stereotypes. The goal of Lotus STEMM is to foster diversity and inclusion in STEMM by ensuring that young South Asian women have equal opportunities to explore and succeed in these fields.
